Put Your Award Seats on Hold Before You Transfer Your Capital One Miles to Flying Blue

Ensure that award space can be booked on points before transferring your Capital One miles to the Flying Blue (Air France/KLM program).

Once you’ve transferred your points, there’s no turning back.

It’s a one-way street, so be mindful of this rule—you wouldn’t want your points trapped in a partner account instead of being used for your travels.

After you have confirmed that there is award space that is bookable with Flying Blue miles, I recommend calling Flying Blue at 1-800-375-8723 to put those award seats on hold.

Calling also ensures that the award space is indeed available and not phantom space.

In my experience, Flying Blue can hold Air France and KLM tickets for 72 hours, but they can only guarantee a 24-hour hold for partner airlines like Virgin Atlantic. This policy can change at any time.

Pro-Tip: Websites periodically show phantom award space that disappears when you are ready to book, so speaking with an agent to confirm availability and putting the seat/s on hold are suggested steps before transferring points. Alternatively, you can also risk transferring without placing your flights on hold. Fingers crossed that the points transfer instantly, so you can book those award flights immediately. Both options have worked for me.

Learn the Trick to Find the Cheapest Flying Blue Awards

To ensure you get the best and cheapest Flying Blue award seat available, I encourage you to learn the strategy for finding those inexpensive redemptions.

The related blog post below will guide you on the steps in searching for the cheapest Flying Blue award seats up to a year out.

Consider Waiting for a Higher Transfer Bonus

Before you proceed with the transfer, I want to highlight that recently, Chase Ultimate Rewards Points and American Express Membership Rewards Points offered 25% transfer bonuses to Flying Blue.

Therefore, if you hold those points currencies and don’t urgently need Flying Blue miles, I recommend waiting for those bonuses to come back again in the near future.

However, if you need Flying Blue miles immediately and have a significant number of Capital One miles, I recommend taking advantage of this promotion.

Steps On How to Transfer Capital One Miles to Partners (Computer/Browser)

Step 1: Log In to Capital One & Click View Rewards

I selected to transfer miles from my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Step 2: Select “Convert Rewards”

Step 3: Select Flying Blue (Air France/KLM)

Select your preferred transfer partner and click “Transfer Miles”.

Loyalty programs that have transfer bonus offers are usually featured on the top of this page.

We announce transfer bonuses at our free Travel Miles and Points Facebook Group.

Step 4: Enter Your Frequent Flier Program Account Number

Make sure you have signed up for a Flying Blue account before transferring, as you will need your frequent flier number to complete the process.

Step 5: Transfer Your Capital One Miles to Flying Blue

The minimum amount miles that you can transfer is 1,000 Capital One miles.

You will receive a total of 1,200 Flying Blue Miles for every 1,000 Capital One miles transferred during this transfer bonus promo.

As mentioned above, you should only begin the transfer process if you are sure there is award space on Flying Blue.

Step 6: Book Your Flight

Check your Flying Blue account to make sure that the transfer was successful.

As mentioned previously, all transfers are final and irreversible.

Capital One miles typically show up in your account within 24 hours, but some transfers may take longer.

Once the points are in your loyalty account, book your flight.

Steps On How to Transfer Capital One Miles to Flying Blue (Mobile App)

The steps on the app are similar to the computer version.

Once you log in, you will be asked to select the Capital One credit card you would like to transfer points from.

In the example below, I am prompted to select to move miles from either my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card or my Capital One Spark Miles for Business Credit Card.

I opted to transfer miles from my Capital One Venture X card.

You will then be directed to a web browser, which will have the identical steps as in the previous section.

The Flying Blue frequent flier program allows you to earn and redeem miles for flights, upgrades, and other travel-related expenses.

As a Flying Blue member, you can earn miles by using specific credit cards, shopping with partner retailers, and staying at partner hotels.

Since Air France and KLM are members of Sky Team, you can also earn Flying Blue Miles whenever you fly with an alliance partner.

Here are the current Sky Team Alliance partners:

  • Aeroflot
  • Aerolineas Argentina
  • Aeromexico
  • AirEuropa
  • Air France
  • ITA
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM
  • Korean Air
  • MEA
  • Saudia

25% Off Discount for Kids Under 12

Flying Blue also offers a 25% discount on award tickets for children aged 2 to 11 who are accompanied by a traveling adult.

These discounts are only currently applicable to Air France and KLM-marketed flights. a

These award tickets are automatically applied during the booking process.

If you’re traveling with an infant under two years old or have minors traveling alone, Flying Blue requires you to contact them to book these award seats.

How to Maximize Your Flying Blue Miles

Once you’ve transferred your Capital One miles to your Flying Blue account, you can use your miles to book flights on Air France, KLM, and other SkyTeam partners.

To get the most value out of your Flying Blue miles, it’s essential to do your research and look for opportunities to book flights at the lowest possible redemption rates.

Some tips to consider include the following:

a. Look for “Promo Rewards,” which are special deals that offer up to 50% off regular redemption rates. More about this next section.

b. Book flights during off-peak seasons or weekdays, when redemption rates are typically lower.

c. Consider booking one-way instead of round-trip tickets, saving you miles.

d. Search for flights with flexible dates and be open to changing your travel plans if it means a better redemption rate.

Stack With Flying Blue Promo Rewards

Flying Blue Promo Awards are a special promotion that allows travelers to redeem their Flying Blue miles for flights at a discounted rate.

These promotions are available for a limited time, allowing travelers to save up to 50% on flights to select destinations worldwide.

To maximize your Flying Blue Promo Awards, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Plan: Flying Blue Promo Rewards are announced a few months in advance, so it’s a good idea to plan your travel accordingly. Check the Flying Blue website or sign up for their newsletter to stay informed about upcoming promotions.
  • Be flexible: Promo Awards are available for a limited number of seats on select flights, so it’s essential to be flexible with your travel dates and destinations. If you’re open to traveling during off-peak times or to less popular destinations, you may have a better chance of finding available seats.
  • Check the fine print: Read the Promo Awards terms and conditions before booking your flight. Some restrictions, such as blackout dates or limited availability on specific routes, may apply.
  • Compare prices: While Promo Awards can offer significant savings, comparing prices with other airlines and booking sites is always a good idea to ensure you get the best bang for your mile.
  • Use your miles wisely: Flying Blue miles can also be used for upgrades, hotel stays, car rentals, and other travel expenses. Consider your travel goals and how to use your miles to maximize your overall travel experience.
  • Positioning Flights: Lastly, be willing to take a positioning flight to where a Promo Award is currently offered. For example, if the promo award is offered in Dallas or Atlanta, you can fly from your home airport to those cities a day or two before to take advantage of these deeply discounted flights.

Take A Positioning Flight

Taking a positioning flight is essential when stacking Capital One Transfer Bonuses and Flying Blue Promo Rewards because the discounted rates are usually only available for specific routes and destinations.

For example, if the Promo Reward is only available for flights departing from Atlanta, but you live in New Orleans, you may need to take a positioning flight to Atlanta before taking advantage of the discounted rate.

Positioning flights can also help you take advantage of more favorable flight times or connections.

Arriving in the departure city a day or two in advance can ensure you won’t miss your flight due to delays or other unforeseen circumstances. Plus, you get to visit another destination in the process.

With that said, it’s important to note that taking a positioning flight does add additional costs and logistics to your trip, so you should weigh the potential savings against the extra time and expenses involved.

In summary, when you are unable to find flights from your home airport, make sure to explore using positioning flights to airports served by Air France and KLM.

Check out the table below for the complete list of airports currently being served by Air France and KLM.

Consider Taking Positioning Flights To/From These Airports
ATL (Atlanta)
BOS (Boston)
ORD (Chicago)

Flying Blue Offers Free Stopovers

Flying Blue has recently introduced a fantastic new feature for award flights – free stopovers!

Now, you have the opportunity to explore multiple destinations in one trip, adding an exciting twist to your travel plans.

Of course, this is all subject to award space availability.

Stopovers can now be booked on all Flying Blue partner airlines up to 365 days before the last segment of the flight.

To take advantage of this perk, call Flying Blue at 1 (800)-375-8723, and their agents will assist you in adding stopovers to your itinerary.

Flying Blue can hold your award ticket for up to 72 hours. Just give them a call to do this.

Example Itineraries with Stopovers
SFO-CDG (free stopover in Paris for a week or a month)
CDG-BCN (final destination)
JFK-AMS (free stopover in Amsterdam for 2 weeks or longer)
AMS-IST (final destination)
TPE-SFO (free stopover in San Francisco for 3 days)
SFO-JFK (final destination)

Do Flying Blue Miles Expire?

Before you transfer your Capital One miles, be aware that Flying Blue miles expire after two years.

However, you can extend their validity by taking another flight on any SkyTeam carrier and crediting those miles to your Flying Blue account.

Remember, flights operated by Air France, KLM, or any of their partner airlines qualify for this extension.

Additionally, if you make purchases using an eligible co-branded credit card, the expiration of your miles will be extended by two years.

This way, you can make the most of your earned miles and enjoy the rewards for longer.

Final Thoughts

If you have a considerable stash of Capital One miles, consider taking advantage of this limited-time 20% transfer bonus from Capital One to Flying Blue (Air France/KLM) to maximize your travel rewards.

Make sure to complete your transfers before the September 29, 2024 deadline as the 20% transfer bonus expires then.

Also, do not transfer unless you have confirmed that award space is available, as the transfer process is a one-way street. Once your Capital One miles are in Flying Blue, you can’t transfer them back to Capital One.

Lastly, stack this transfer bonus with Flying Blue promo rewards and free stopovers so you are guaranteed to get the best bang for your mile.

Safe travels!
